Beethoven Piano ‘Moonlight’ sonata sheet
Moonlight Beethoven Sonata: The Piano Sonata No.14 in C-sharp Minor ‘Quasi Una Fantasia’, Op.27 and No.2, by Ludwig van Beethoven is known as the ‘Moonlight’ Sonata. The phrase ‘Quasi Una Fantasia’ was given by Beethoven because the sonata does not follow the traditional pattern, the fast-slow-fast sequence is used to arrange the movements. Moonlight sonata was written by Beethoven in 1801. Beethoven dedicated Moonlight Sonata to his pupil, a seventeen-year-old Countess Giulietta Guicciardi, with whom he was in love according to some accounts. In 1832, several years after the death of Beethoven Ludwig Restlab, a great music critic and German poet compared the music of the first movement to moonlight shining on Lake Lucerne. Beethoven’s Piano Sonata op.13 in C minor, his best-known earlier work, is ‘Pathetique’. He even composed horn and violin sonatas.
Major Beethoven Sonata: The moonlight sonata has three movements:
1. Adagio sostenuto
2. Allegretto
3. Presto agitato
The first movement is written in a truncated sonata form. The second movement of the Beethoven sonata is a relatively conventional trio and minuet, a moment of relative calm, written in D-flat major. This key signature is enharmonically C-sharp major, that is like the tonic major for the whole work. The odd sound of the first bars in the Beethoven sonata is the result of the minuet that starts on the ‘wrong’ key, the dominant key of A-Flat major. This odd sound is very slight and the music settles into D flat only in the second phase.
Piano Beethoven sonata: This sonata is one of the popular piano sonatas by Beethoven. Poet Ludwig Rellstab named it the ‘The Moonlight Sonata’, after being inspired on a moon lit night, on the Lucerna River bank. Many biographers made a connection between Beethoven’s undeclared love for Giuletta Guicciardi and the sonorities of the first part. In Beethoven manuscripts, there are various notes from Mozart’s ‘Don Juan’, notes following the killing of the commander by Don Juan, and lower, the passage is rendered in C-sharp minor, in complete resemblance to the sonata’s first part in C-sharp minor. After careful comparison and analysis, it is clear that it is not the case of a romantic moon lit night, but of a somber funeral hymn. There are three parts in the Beethoven piano sonata. In Parts through the elaborated themes and motifs, the sonata gives the impression of a whole. The main musical theme is elaborate while the second part and the second motif of the main theme are repeated in part III of the first theme.
Beethoven sonata sheet: Part I is based on an accompanying motif, in triplet rhythm which creates an impression of meditative state of mind. The sustaining time of the modern piano is much longer than the instruments during the days of Beethoven. The second part is shorter and gives one the perception of a deeper connection between the first and third part. The third part is longer as the first two parts. This sonata is one of the most well known piano sonatas. There are several websites on the Internet from where you can access the Beethoven sonata sheet.
